Nestled in the mountains around the lake, the park offers you the opportunity to enjoy some of Maryland’s most breathtaking scenery. The Yugiogeni River flows through the park’s boundaries, through rocky gorges and rapids. It is worth seeing the surrounding river, waterfalls and forests, especially when surrounded by the bright glow of autumn hues. Witness the dramatic fall of Muddy Creek Falls as it plunges 53 feet into the river below. The waterfalls are surrounded by tall hemlock trees that dominate this forest and simply colour in autumn.    

The Canyon Trail is the perfect 1 1/4 mile trail for backpackers. As you follow this trail, you will pass several waterfalls (including Swallow Falls), including Muddy Creek Falls, and pass through a beautiful, centuries-old forest. There are also connecting paths leading to Garrett State Forest and other state parks.    

Enjoy fishing on the Yugiogeni River. This catch-and-release trout fishing area is supported by annual stockings of brown and rainbow trout in the trout fishery.  

From Herrington Manor State Park, Rent a bike to Swallow Falls State Park on 5.5 miles of connecting trails. Due to limited staffing, bike rentals are only available at Herrington Manor State Park but are usually available at both locations.   

The Yugiogeni River is also famous for kayaking and rafting. Watching kayakers practice on the rapids is a privilege to visit the park.
