After two decades of entertaining her audience with her witty charm, interacting with numerous celebrity guests and showing their different sides to the audience. The Ellen DeGeneres show has come to an end.
The announcement for the show’s end came to her employees after she addressed them on Tuesday and informed them about it. She discussed the topic and its details in her interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The announcement came at a time when the show’s audience has been plummeting of the allegations and controversies surrounding the show. However, Ellen said that she was ending the show for creative reasons and not because of the less audience.
In a statement, she said, “When you’re creative, you constantly need to be challenging- and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is. It is not a challenge anymore.”
Mike Darnell, President of the unscripted TV at Warner Bros., said, “Although all good things must come to an end, you still have to hope the truly great things never will.” Confirming the announcement of the end of the show.
The show will come to end sometime in the spring of 2022 starting in the September.
History of the show
The Ellen DeGeneres Show debuted in 2003 as a daytime talk show welcoming celebrity guests. Therefore, having fun with them, showing a different side of celebrities on the show, since the beginning. All brought together with the wits of a Comedian Ellen DeGeneres.
Being a show loved and embraced by the audience. The show also won 60 Emmys over the years with 19 seasons, one of the longest-running shows on Air.
Ellen told The Hollywood reporter “I was going to stop after season 16.” But after many discussions, she agreed to do three more seasons. Ellen made the information public in May 2019 that she has already signed a deal and will be hosting her show through 2022. She said, “From the beginning, It was going to be like a relationship.” She added, saying, “We’ve been through the good, the bad, the Fifty Shades of Grey phase. It is a lot of fun, and 16 years is a pretty good run. Sometimes in a relationship, you need to take a break. Yet I don’t. You’re Stuck with me. I just signed for three more years.”
Controversies around the show
Ellen’s show has been going through a very rough time for almost a year. The controversies and allegations of mean behavior of the host, a toxic work environment on the sets. The allegations of social misconduct by the current and former employees for the producers of the show.
It all started when a Youtuber Nikkie de Jaegar, opened about her experiences of visiting the sets of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on a Dutch talk show, De Wereld Draait Door, in Feb. 2020.
Nikkie told the host Matthijs van Nieuwkerk her experience was not as good as she expected it to be. Later in an interview, she said she is receiving a very cold welcome from one of the interns on the show.
Things took a turn for the worse when host a podcast Kevin T. Porter started a trend on Twitter to respond to the tweet with “most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean”. The comment section was flooded with thousands of responses from former employees, and some current employees.
The former employees mostly blamed the producers and executive producers for not providing a proper work environment and employment details. Additionally, they accused them of firing the employees for taking medical leaves and got as far as accusing them of harassment.
