The people of Kumandra are torn by infighting following an attack by a species known as the Druun. Raya has identified the lone remaining dragon Sisu, who helped turn back the Druun and produce the diamond five years later. Review: Raya and The Last Dragon
Raya and the Last Dragon is one of the few Disney films that isn’t replete with the upbeat melodies that have become a Disney cliché. Instead, it’s mostly an adventure film with a lot of Disney elements, but it’s a little darker and more fantasy-based.
The cast is excellent, and it demonstrates some shifts in Disney’s approach to representation. Not only are all of the characters Asian (despite the fact that Kumandra is a fictional kingdom), but Disney also cast Asian actors to play them. Awkwafina plays the trusting Sisu, while Kelly Marie Tran leaves the Star Wars: The Last Jedi controversy behind to play the headstrong Raya. Raya’s competitor Namaari is a woman bound by honour to her people, while Sandra Oh plays her mother. The last warrior of the Spine is played by Benedict Wong, and Raya’s father, Chief Benja, is played by Daniel Dae Kim. Izaac Wang, who plays Boun, pairs up with Awkwafina’s Sisu to provide a lot of the laughs (along with a pickpocketing baby).
Coming to the movie feels like visually. It has got decently sequenced action scenes with animation that holds attention. Overall, it’s a nice, attractive package. In some ways, the dragons were a little less kid-friendly in appearance to give the film a little more edge, but I understand why they chose to make Sisu fun and light.
