What is the story of the King of Bachata?
KING Of BACHATA ties the story of Bachata to the music legacy of Dominican singer-songwriter Romeo Santos, the genre’s most prominent champion and megastar.
The film follows the downtrodden genre’s ascent from oppressive rural roots in the Dominican Republic to great international recognition, ending in a record-breaking world-record-breaking concert featuring Romeo Santos and the greatest bachateros to have pioneered the way ahead.
While the documentary will act as a window into his followers, the concert will serve to get the historical moment of the genre into their hands since this would be a moment where the stage would be filled with the most iconic bachateros, all taking part in Utopia.
His Achievements
He also made history as the first Latino musician to play at a venue in New Jersey. Utopia was a sold-out 80,000-person event, a first of its kind to promote the musical genre bachata, which originated in the Dominican Republic. Alongside his top hits, Santos asked well-known bachateros such as El Chaval de la Bachata, Frank Reyes, and Luis Vargas to perform onstage with him. Aventuras main singer, songwriter, and co-producer was Romeo. Anthony “Romeo” Santos, his cousin Henry Santos “Hushed Hard”, and friends Lenny Santos “Len Melody” and Max Santos “Mikey A.k.a. Max Agenda” created Aventura in 1996.
Aventuras debut album was released in 1999, aiming to take kings of bachata music beyond its traditional roots and blend it with hip hop and R&B. The song “Obsesion” was a big hit in several countries in 2002 topping the international charts in France, Germany, and Italy. On July 12, 2014, Romeo Santos returned along with Lenny, Mikey, and Henry (Aventura) to close the second night of their sold-out Yankee Stadium show. On December 1, 2015, it was revealed that Aventura will perform a series of performances at United Palace Theatre in New York City, their last time together for a whole month of February. On February 4, 2016, they performed to sold-out crowds for the first time since the split, and their final performance was held on February 28, 2016.
On December 8, 2019, Romeo Santos tweeted a video to announce Aventura will be starting a tour with Gira Inmortal throughout the US in 2020. His first acting role was in 2007s “Sanky Panky” from the Dominican Republic, where he appeared with fellow members of Aventuras band playing a live set in Altos de Chavon. Romeo Santos made his Hollywood debut opposite Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, and Paul Walker in Furious 7, released in April 2015. He was apprehensive about playing his part in Furious 7 but was helped by his castmates to make him comfortable. In 2016s The Angry Birds Movie, Santos voices a character from the cartoon, Early Bird.
In 2013, he sang “Quiero Ser Tu Amigo”, a friendship song, on an episode of Sesame Street. Inspired by the album Utopia by Romeo, the documentary and performance are love letters to the genre. The concert, including incredible performances from Cardi B and Aventura, is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Latinx culture and pivotal in Latinx music history.
