NBA 2022: Golden State Warriors are now seven-time champions, defeated the Boston Celtics

Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics to win the 2022 NBA title. They won the match 103 – 90 and the series by 4-2, establishing themselves as one of the NBA’s greatest dynasties. It is the seventh champion tag the Warriors have achieved in its franchise history. The Warriors won the final three games of the best-of-seven NBA Finals despite falling behind 2-1 in the series.

Trio of  Curry, Wiggins and Draymond Green in NBA Finals

Steph Curry led the Warriors with 34 points on 12-of-21 shooting, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in 40 minutes on his route to his fourth NBA title. Curry hit six triples in game 6. Stephen won his first finals Most Valuable Player award.

In the NBA Finals, Andrew Wiggins had 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting, four triples, six rebounds, five assists, four steals, and three blocks.

Draymond Green put forth a strong showing on both ends of the court. In 42 minutes, Golden State’s defensive captain had a near triple-double, scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting with two 3-pointers, 12 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The Opening Quarter

On Thursday evening, the stage was set for the sixth game of the #NBAfinals, in TD Garden, the Celtics’ home arena. In a do-or-die game, the Celtics started Game 6 the same way they started the elimination games against Milwaukee and Miami by taking an early lead. In no time Celtics were leading by 14-2; they hit four of their first six shots, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Tatum and Brown. Boston committed four turnovers in the first ten minutes and conceded three offensive rebounds.

Warriors offence

It looked like the Celtics were going to slay the Warriors, but they had other plans. The Warriors had shown up from a 22-16 behind to score 37-22, storming back into the game. A long run of 21-0 onslaught took the game away from the Celtics, which is the longest scoring run in the last 50 years of NBA finals.

The 13 turnovers by the Celtics and the nine offensive rebounds by Golden State Warriors could have resulted in a much poor halftime score than the 54-39. The offence by the Warriors silences the crowd in TD Garden.

In the third quarter, the Celtics tried to shift the game. Horford scored four 3 – pointers capping him with 12 points in Q3. In the Q3 Celtics scored 27 points compared to Warrior’s 22. It brings down the deficit to 9 points.

Last Quarter of The NBA Finals

In Q4, the championship was on the line, Celtics committed two more turnovers, and a couple of missed layups let the match slip away from them. Poole’s four points extended their lead to 12 points. The lead was too much for the Celtics to overcome. Curry and the Warriors shot down every attack thrown by the Celtics.

With 4 minutes left in the game, Curry scored a three-pointer, giving Golden State a 96-81 edge. Curry was ignorant of the fact that his genius had quieted the crowd. The Warriors’ dynasty was flourishing once more.

Boston Celtics performance

After going 25-25 after 50 games, Boston went on a tear to reach the finals and come close to winning the franchise’s first championship since 1986. It was Boston’s fifth loss in 22 championship series appearances, despite the fact that the team had turned their season around to have a chance at the title.

Boston Celtics Performance

The Celtics struggled to keep the ball in their hands throughout the playoffs, and their 23 turnovers in Game 6, including seven in 11 possessions at the end of the second quarter, exposed a youthful squad that couldn’t handle the pressure. The Warriors got 20 points off Boston’s turnovers and another 21 points off 15 offensive rebounds.

With 34 points, Jaylen Brown led the Celtics. Al Horford scored 19 points. Jayson Tatum scored 13 points, but he only made 6 of 18 shots from the field.

Title Stats

It’s the fourth title for Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala.  They won their first three titles together in 2015, 2017 and 2018, when the team was dynastic and reached the finals five times in a row.

After winning five as a player, Golden State coach Steve Kerr now has his ninth championship. He joins Pat Riley, Red Auerbach, John Kundla, Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich as the sixth coach to win four championships.
