The Met Gala is a summer night of dress-up that celebrates the opening of a yearly museum exhibit and makes the night’s style set. In addition to Vogue Editor In Chief Anna Wintour, almost every year brings a famous co-chair along with celebrity attendees.
The 1996 event was hosted by Harper Bazaar. The editor-in-chief Elizabeth Tilberis, Marie Chantal, Princess of Greece, and the philanthropist and socio-economics Helene David Weill, wife of New York City-born investment banker Michel David Weill. The theme of the 1996 gala was Christian Dior.
In 1997, Wintour co-chaired the event with Sociologist Julia Koch and Women’s Wear Daily Editor Patrick McCarthy, and in 1997 was Gianni Versace was dedicated to him after his death in July 1997.
In 1998, she co-chaired with designer Miuccia Prada and sociologist Pia Getty. The last Met Gala of the 20th century was all about skirts and style.
Tommy Hilfiger was the sponsor of the 1999 Met Gala. Winters, Hilfigers, Estee Lauder Style and Image Director Aerin Lauder, and co-chair of the event.
After a hiatus in 2000, the Met Gala returned in 2001 for a new season, in the spring. Loreal CEO Lindsay Owen Jones and her wife Cristina hosted the event, and Loreal was the night’s sponsor. The event was sponsored by Wintour, Oscar de la Renta, his wife, and designer Carolina Herrera.
In 2001, Schlossberg was honorary president. Kennedy and Schlossberg attended the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute gala after opening Kennedy’s White House the year before for the museum.
Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and Nicole Kidman attended the Costume Institute Benefit Gala hosted by Gucci and the Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 28, 2003. The motto was “Goddess in classic mode” and was sponsored by the Gucci Group and Ford.
Wintour and Kidman would reunite in 2005 with Karl Lagerfeld, a member of Gucci’s creative team. That evening, the theme was House of Chanel, with one of Lagerfeld’s chairs. Caroline, Princess of Hanover, was honorary president.
In 2006, Wintour shared the night with Burberry legend Christopher Bailey and Sienna Miller as honorary chairmen and former CEO Burberry Rose Marie Bravo and Duke of Devonshire Peregrine Cavendish. Anna Wintour, Peregrine’s Cavendish and Burberry founder Christopher Bailey, Sienna Miller, and Rose Maria Bravo met at the 2006 gala.
In 2007, he was accompanied by his wife, Salma Hayek. Hayek and Francois attended the benefit gala of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Costume Institute on May 7, 2007.
On May 5, 2008, The Costume Institute hosted the “Superheroes” Gala with Armani at the Metropolitan Museum of Art sponsored by Armani, with honorary chairman Giorgio Armani, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney.
Wintour co-hosted the Met Gala in 2009 with Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake, and honorary president Marc Jacobs. George Clooney and Julia Roberts were named co-chairs along with Wintour’s in 2008. Justin Timberlake, Marc Jacobs, and Kate Moss attended the 2009 gala. In 2009, the theme of the Met Ball was “Models as Muse,” embodied in the manner by sponsor Jacobs.
Wintour shared the chair with Oprah Winfrey and Gap Vice President Patrick Robinson in 2010. The evening was sponsored by Gap and focused on American women, fashion, and national identity.

This year, Salma Hayek and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault were honorary presidents.
Pinault’s company, Kering, is owned by Alexander McQueen. Wintour and Carey Mulligan met at the gala in 2012. She was later joined by her husband, Carey Mulligans, who is also a board member.
In 2013, Mara, Santo, Tischi, and Wintour co-chaired the event.
None other than Beyonce herself was honorary president in 2013.
It was sponsored by Lauder’s lifestyle brand Aerin. Idris Elba and Taylor Swift joined Wintour in 2016. The event was hosted by Marissa Mayer (entrepreneur, film producer, and third wife of Rupert Murdoch and Wendi Murdoch), and recognized chairperson was Hong Kong billionaire Silas Chou and Jennifer Lawrence and Gong Li (CEO of Yahoo ).
In 2017 more co-hosts were on the scene than ever before, including this year. This list includes a mix of the business universe with Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Pharrell, and Katy Perry.
The 2020 Met Gala was planned to be held on May 4, but the general public was in a panic, so it was canceled.
The Met Gala happened this September 13, 2021, and was co-hosted by Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, and Naomi Osaka.
